From Concept to Code: Birth of BIKE.co

The project began like many garage dreams, over a work stand, a half-tightened thru-axle, and a debate about how cycling tech always seems almost perfect but never quite connected. The founding team consisted of software developers, former shop mechanics, and a couple of weekend racers who kept forgetting where they stored their tubeless plugs. 

 

Each of us juggled six or seven cycling apps and still felt we were missing crucial context before making purchase or training decisions.

Those sketches evolved into wireframes, then prototypes, and finally into the BIKE.co beta that landed in riders’ hands last summer.

When a cassette hits its wear limit, BIKE.co not only reminds you to swap it, but also shows compatible replacements, lists installation time, and even suggests a torque wrench if your toolbox lacks one. It’s practical guidance in real time rather than a random upsell.

We also designed the Garage module to track component life cycles, encouraging timely maintenance over premature disposal and helping riders calculate carbon savings when they commute by bike.

 

An open API lets local nonprofits import route data for community events, while race organizers can link course maps to on-the-day safety notifications. The same geolocation tools that log hero rides can also direct new cyclists to protected lanes or e-bike charging stations, small details that remove friction and build confidence.

 

As we push updates, we’re guided by a belief that innovation doesn’t have to sacrifice simplicity. Cyclists should spend more time turning pedals than tapping screens.
